Winter beater bicycle

Posted by Brad on Oct 19 2009 | Tagged as: Cycling

This weekend I scored myself a nice winter beater bicycle. I saw an ad on Kijiji advertising a free men’s mountain bike. I e-mailed the dude to see if the bike was still available and to my surprise it was. Right arm! So what did I get? Well the bike is an older steel frame Supercycle, which even came with fenders. The bike is not much to look at, but who cares, its new job will be to survive a Winnipeg winter.

I’ve definitely got to change that seat!

My New Kayak: LiquidLogic Remix XP10

Posted by Brad on Aug 18 2009 | Tagged as: Kayaking

Well today I drove down to the US to pick up my new kayak: a LiquidLogic Remix XP10. Although I haven’t had the chance to take it for a paddle, I must say that so far I’m pretty impressed with the boat.

The kayak is shorter than my previous kayak, a Pelican Getaway 116. At 10′3″, I was able to just barely fit the kayak in the elevator at my apartment building! This is great news for me. Now I don’t have to drive to the other end of the city just to pick up my kayak whenever I want to go for a paddle :)

As long as it’s nice out this weekend, I plan on taking the XP10 out for a paddle. I’m thinking Lake Winnipeg would be a great place for the maiden voyage.

OttoCYCLE: Building Better Biking in Winnipeg

Posted by Brad on Aug 17 2009 | Tagged as: Cycling, GPS

Last Monday I began bringing along a GPS device with me whenever I cycle to track my course. Why? Well I am participating in a study put on by the Centre for Sustainable Transportation (CST) and the City of Winnipeg. I will be carrying this device with me for the next two weeks.

So how does the study work? Well it’s simple: volunteers carry a small GPS device along with them whenever they cycle over a two week period. I attached mine to my rear pannier bag, notice the nice waterproofing. ;)

All the data collected by the CST will be analyzed, and then submitted to the City of Winnipeg. The idea is that the analysis can be used to help improve existing or build new cycling infrastructure as part of the city’s Active Transportation Network. I really hope the data goes to good use, as Winnipeg currently has some pretty lackluster cycling infrastructure.

The CST still needs volunteers to participate in the study, so if you’re interested visit http://www.centreforsustainabletransportation.org/OttoCycle.htm

In May I will be travelling to Peru for six weeks. I’ve set up a separate blog to document my travels throughout Peru (Brad’s Peruvian Adventure). I hope that others may find the information useful and may even be inspired to go on an adventure of their own.
